Since ALfheim Online is very similar to SAO in terms of coding and skills, much of the SAO skills have been transferred over to ALO. All races have the skill or ability to fly for an endless amount of time, but no race can fly in dungeons and caves. Most races are only allowed certain skills. Players can earn skill points by completing quests or "killing" other players. Any time a player earns skills from killing another player, they earn about 5 skill points. Skill points are used to make a skill stronger. The more skill points on a skill, the stronger or better your character will be at using the skill.

i. all prior combat skills must have at least one skill point in them before you can add another skill. If you want to add another skill that your character will be able to use, simply put a skill point towards that skill.
ii. combat skill points will be earned the normal way through quests, battles, "killing" other players, etc.
iii. any non-combat skills (forging, sewing, etc.) can only obtain a skill point in that area if the player specifically trains that skill in game (once more, considering every player technically has those skills, minus the race-specific skills, at the start, they would really only appear on the player's profile after they have began to work with it through various means).
iv. Members must keep track of their character's skills in their character's profile.
v. Skills may be trained up to level 1,000.
Basic Skills:
- Raise HP - Allows a player's health points to be raised by 20 points.
- Raise MP - Allows a player's magic points to be raised by 20 points.
- Raise Speed - Allows a player's speed to be raised by 10 points.
- Raise Attack/Damage - Allow a player's attack/damage to be raised by 10 points.

- Straining - Hear sounds from further away than normal. Higher level of skill grants the ability to hear through locked rooms.
- Hiding - Allows a player to disappear from targets that use visual tracking.
- Acrobatics - Determines a player's jumping height and the ability to perform aerial maneuvers.
- Reveal
- Sprint - a burst of speed, and a passive increase in the player's effectiveness at dodging strikes.
- Extended weight limit - Increase inventory size.

- Parry - The ability to use an attack to block an opposing strike.
- Howl - Attracts the attention of NPC monsters.
- Battle Healing - Recover low amounts of HP over time during battle.
- Emergency Recovery
- Meditation - Increases HP regeneration and decreases the remaining time of negative statuses by entering a mental concentration pose.
- Light metal/Lightweight Shield/Leather/Heavy Metal equipment - The effectiveness with which a player can use light metal, lightweight shield, leather, and heavy metal equipment.

- Meteor Break - (7-hit combo) A seven-hit combo, needing unarmed and one-handed sword skills, that uses tackles to chain together strong attacks. (cool down: 7 posts)
- Meteor Fall - (2-hit combo) A Sword Skill that combines a punch with the user's right fist and a slash with a sword. The sword is thrown into the air before the first hit of the skill. (cool down: 6 posts)

Cooking - The effectiveness with which a player can combine ingredients to create varieties of food, some of which can have medicinal properties. Higher level of skill allows the successful cooking of higher-ranked foods.
Fishing - The effectiveness with which a player can catch fish. Higher levels catch rarer fish more often.
