SPRING GARDENING
Anyone who was even remotely acquainted with Fleur knew that she held a passion for fantasy novels, and her interest in them was a large part of why she started to play ALfheim Online in the first place. She cherished those enticing tales of shining knights, dashing swashbucklers, and gritty captains and the adventures they undertook. Even if their quest ended in misfortune the hero would always go out in a blaze of glory, though more times than not they ended up victorious and rewarded with both renown and wealth. Fleur had dreamed of having such a wondrous story. Dreamed of being the hero of her own adventure, filled with all manner of terrifying creatures, beautiful castles, and of course endless glory at the end. And to the girl ALO had offered just that opportunity. And yet, here she was staring at the outskirts of the Ancient Forest, not about to excavate some ancient ruin or defeat a zealous sorcerer, but instead she had been sent to gather herbs. Herbs. The Sylph sighed as she checked her map to see if she was in the right location for the quest. Fortunately, or perhaps unfortunately, she was, and with a quick swipe of her hand both the map and quest log disappeared so that nothing but the shadowy boughs of the Ancient Forest remained in front of her. The girl glanced around for a moment, almost more so to make sure no one saw her doing the quest than to check for danger, before plunging into the primeval wood.
As soon as she stepped foot into the forest the bright sun which had lit up the world disappeared and was instead replaced with a stifling gloom. Within a few steps the Sylph was surrounded by gnarled trees, and with each second the air seemed to grow colder and colder as the warmth of the sun faded. The air was dead silent as well, save for the crunching of leaves as the girl navigated her way through the thin winding dirt path which cut through the forest.
Her footsteps were slow and methodical and seemed almost by habit. Most of Fleur’s time in the fantasy world so far had been spent in the Ancient Forest, either questing or simply taking a peaceful walk to lose some steam, and the shadowed woods were becoming a second home to her. Thus rather than watch her surroundings the girl was instead lost in thought over the “epic” quest she had taken and the fame that would surely come with it. Fleur, Master of Herbs? No…Fleur, Herb Seeker? Or maybe Warrior of the Herb… The girl frowned. No matter how it was spun the quest was just…pathetic. The only consolation for the Sylph as she continued forward was that the quest carried with it a monetary reward, though at this rate she would have to finish the quest at night when no one else was around to avoid the embarrassment…
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A few minutes later Fleur saw that the thick undergrowth of the forest had begun to grow thinner as the dusty path began to wind down into a valley of sorts. Soon thereafter the Sylph emerged at the edge of a large glade. The sudden break in the canopy blinded the girl for a second as her eyes readjusted for the sunlight, but soon the area became entirely visible to her. A thin bubbling stream wound its way through the glade, its rippling surface agleam as it danced across pebbled banks. Knee high grass swayed in the breeze and appeared to cover the entire glade, though Fleur soon noticed that the grass broke in places to make way for an assortment of brightly colored leafy plants. The air also grew warm again and the Sylph took a moment to take in a deep breath of clear air.
Checking her map one last time to make sure she was in the right area the Sylph began to walk into the glade, her hand moving to grip the hilt of her sword. Aside from the quiet murmur of the stream and the rustling of grass the glade was quiet and seemed devoid of life, but Fleur remembered well the warnings of the NPC quest giver. Though the old sage had been rather grouchy and quite frankly irritatingly demanding when he gave out the quest, the old man had still been generous enough to let Fleur know that the area with the herbs was heavily populated with wolves. The girl had dealt with wolves before in some of her treks into the forest and so knew that the mongrels tended to spring out of nowhere. And although more of a weaker monster, it was rather annoying.
Though as Fleur moved through the tall grass she had to divide her attention between watching out for potential wolves and looking for any trace of the herbs she was supposed to find. She had been given a brief description of the plants by the NPC alongside the warning, and according to him the herbs had four ovular leaves with yellow spots and a single red streak down the middle. So far any sight of the plant eluded Fleur though, and the carpet of grass was not making the job easy.
A few moments later the Sylph had all but decided to just cut down the entire glade until she found the herbs, when she spotted a plant at the edge of the stream which seemed different from the rest. And sure enough as she began to approach it a ray of sunlight illuminated the yellow spots on its surface. Letting out a sigh of relief the girl walked to the edge of the stream and stabbed her sword into the rocky shore. She then bent down to retrieve the herb, using both of her hands to dig out the roots to start what would hopefully be a quick gathering of the remaining four herbs, so that she could be done once and for all with the dull quest.
